Thirteen days chasing the autumn colour down the peninsula — from the ridges of Seoraksan, where it lands first, to the temples of Gyeongju, where it arrives last.
The route

Everything here is time-sensitive in a way the rest of the plan is not.
Korean Thanksgiving falls on 4–6 October 2026, so you land on the last day of the biggest domestic travel weekend of the year.
The arrival itself is unaffected. Expect heavier airport road traffic, and some smaller neighbourhood restaurants closed or on short hours that first evening.
Polish passport holders don't need a K-ETA through the end of 2026. Everyone, whatever their nationality, still needs the free e-Arrival Card, filed online up to three days before landing.
Check each family member against their own passport's nationality, in case anyone travels on a different one.
The 2026 peak-colour forecast for Seoraksan isn't published until early September. The long-term average peak is around 17 October; recent years have landed anywhere from the 12th to the 25th.
Booking Seoraksan for 11–12 October is a middle-of-the-window bet: the upper ridges should be in strong colour even if the valley floor is still turning.

Express bus from Dong Seoul Terminal, 2½ to 3 hours — there's no direct train yet. Afternoon at Sokcho Beach and Abai Village, where the little ferry crossing is a cheap and genuinely fun detour. Seafood for dinner.

The big hiking day. Roughly 7.6–8 km round trip, four to five hours with breaks, finishing on more than 800 steel stairs. A real workout, but well within range for an active family with a 12- and a 16-year-old.

Sinheungsa Temple and the Great Buddha, or the short walk to Biryong Falls. The cable car up to Gwongeumseong Fortress gives the view without the climb. Afternoon bus back to Seoul; overnight near Seoul Station for the early train south.

Standard tours run daily and fill fast in October. Some operators need names and passport details submitted in advance. Bring physical passports on the day — photocopies aren't accepted at the checkpoints.

Peak foliage travel and three days past Chuseok, so popular departures — Friday and weekend ones especially — do sell out. Korail's own site can be awkward with foreign cards; Klook and Trainpal are easier from abroad.

A few days aheadTwo Seoul stays, plus Sokcho, Busan and Gyeongju. Autumn drives demand everywhere at once — anything with a mountain or palace view goes early.

You'll be in and out of Seoul Station repeatedly for the Busan and Gyeongju legs, which is what tips it.
Hongdae is a perfectly good call if you'd rather optimise for the smoothest airport transfer on days 1 and 13 instead.
Genuinely undecided
Five bases in thirteen days is a lot of packing and unpacking with two kids. The easiest cut is dropping Busan and Gyeongju entirely and giving those four days to a slower back half in Seoul — Nami Island, Everland, and actual downtime.
Seoraksan, the DMZ and Seoul stay fixed either way.
If you want them
Nami Island / Garden of Morning Calm — gorgeous, but it peaks late October into November, so mid-month you'd likely find it still mostly green.
Jeonju — hanok village and the country's best bibimbap, 1 h 40 by KTX from Seoul. A strong alternative to the whole Busan–Gyeongju leg if one slower stop beats two fast ones.
The plan is a real loop. The question is whether you want to be on it.
Everything above holds together and the days are individually good. But it moves — five hotels, three KTX runs, two long bus legs, and Seoul three separate times. If the honest answer is that the family would rather see less and sit down more, say so and the back half rebuilds around Seoul without touching the parts you asked to keep.
